Terms and conditions of employment for UK and internationally contracted staff

Contractual terms

Salary – The salary for the job is as stated on the advertisement. Salaries are paid monthly in arrears into a bank or building society.

Hours of work – Full-time staff work 35 hours a week.

Probationary periods – All job offers are subject to probationary periods during which time the employee's performance is reviewed from time to time. The notice period that either party needs to give in the probationary period is one week. Following the end of a satisfactory probationary period, the notice period will depend on the salary scale for the job. This will be explained in any offer letter given to successful applicants.

Retirement age – Christian Aid's normal retirement age is 65 years for all employees.

Financial benefits

Pension scheme – All staff are encouraged to join the Christian Aid pension scheme. Currently Christian Aid offers staff the opportunity to join a stakeholder pension scheme.

Loans to staff – Christian Aid provides an interest free season ticket loan to employees contracted to work in the UK through a travel warrant on appointment to enable staff to purchase an annual season ticket for travel between home and office. Interest free loan to purchase bicycle and study loans are also available to all staff.

Bicycle lease scheme – Christian Aid operates a bicycle lease scheme within the UK for employees who wish to use a bicycle to travel to work, with the option to purchase the bicycle at the end of the lease period.

Internationally contracted employeesChristian Aid provides full expatriation benefits, in addition to local benefits, for senior management roles within Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and Asia and the Middle East where staff have had to relocate from their home country.

Expatriate benefits include return flights at start and end of assignment and return flight home each year, accommodation, work permit/visa costs, medical vaccinations, emergency medical insurance, 75% of schooling costs for up to three children and paid rest and recuperation outside the country (if the country is high risk). 

All other roles attract relocation benefits, in addition to local benefits, where staff have had to relocate from their home country. Relocation benefits include flight to host country (in some cases, return flight home at end of assignment), accommodation for two months (this is permanent for Afghanistan and currently for Haiti), work permit/visa costs, medical vaccinations, emergency medical insurance and paid rest and recuperation outside the country (if the country is high risk). 

Leave entitlements

Holiday entitlement – In addition to national and public holidays, annual holiday entitlement is as follows:

  • On appointment: 25 days pro-rated to the start date of employment

  • Five to ten years of service: 28 days

  • Ten years service: 31 days

  • For part time staff, the holiday is pro-rata

  • If, as part of their job, staff travel overseas, one additional day's rest is granted for each full week or part week spent overseas.

Family friendly policies

Flexitime – The flexitime system requires full time staff to be at work during core hours. Full time staff must be at work between 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm with at least half an hour for lunch breaks each day. Part time staff are not eligible for flexitime.

Childcare voucher scheme – Staff are able to purchase childcare vouchers through the payroll, so that childcare is paid directly to the carer. This enables some staff to make a saving on their National Insurance contributions.

Other types of leave – Christian Aid provides other paid and unpaid leave dependent on service. These include generous paid maternity leave, up to two weeks paid parental leave, paid dependants leave and paid compassionate leave. Christian Aid also operates a paid sabbatical leave scheme and 'time off the payroll scheme'.

Learning and development

Christian Aid actively promotes learning and development within the organisation and provides opportunities for sabbaticals, job swaps, secondments and training. Scholarships and interest free study loans are also available to assist with study costs.

Counselling

This is available through the occupational health department and you can have up to five sessions paid by Christian Aid.
